Film shows changes at Charleston fire department

CHARLESTON, S.C. —

A new film shows the changes made at the Charleston Fire Department after nine firefighters died while fighting a furniture store blaze.

"Charleston 9: The Ultimate Sacrifice" was released Wednesday. It was produced for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and has interviews with firefighters, counselors, community leaders and survivors of the fire at the Sofa Super Store.

The June 2007 fire was, at the time, the largest loss of firefighters since the 2011 terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

The fire is thought to have been started by discarded cigarettes in a loading dock. Fire experts hired by the city concluded that inadequate training, outdated tactics and aging equipment contributed to the deaths.
