Don McLean to perform with Portland symphony

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine —

"American Pie" singer Don McLean is coming to Portland for the Fourth of July.

The singer-songwriter has agreed to perform his 1971 hit with the Portland Symphony Orchestra during city's annual Stars and Stripes celebration on the Eastern Promenade. An estimated 60,000 people are expected at the event, where the symphony will perform before and during the city's fireworks show.

McLean gained fame with his No. 1 hit "American Pie," which recounts the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959 — the "day the music died." He now lives in the Maine coastal town of Camden.

He'll also sing his 1972 hit song "Vincent," about artist Vincent Van Gogh.
