SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. —
Managers at the San Onofre nuclear generating plant made a "Star Trek"-themed video stressing safety two years before the plant was shut down in the wake of a radiation leak, officials said.
A two-minute video segment with managers in costumes resembling those in the original "Trek" series was filmed in 2010 in a control room training simulator at the Southern California coastal plant.
The video was called "SONGS Trek," using the acronym for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
"The making of the video cost $800 and was taped in a training facility, so safety was never compromised at San Onofre," plant operator Southern California Edison said in a written statement. "The manager who authorized this video no longer works for SCE."
The video was never completed or used, Edison said. It was aired Tuesday by KGTV-TV (http://bit.ly/12TP0nN ).
The video opens with a shot of the starship Enterprise zooming through space and goes on to show the plant's former chief nuclear officer portraying Capt. James T. Kirk. He talks about safety hazards and the need for so-called three-way communication, in which workers who receive orders repeat them and receive confirmation that they have correctly understood them.
Other San Onofre executives play the crew, including one portraying a pointy-eared Mr. Spock.
"So many safety hazards, lieutenants," Kirk says. "Are you prepared to get us out of our current situation?"
Victor Dricks, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said Thursday that the agency reviewed the video and determined that "it had no safety implications, other than reinforcing the importance of clear communications."
"It was filmed in the plant simulator, not in the control room," Dricks said.
The video was intended as a light-hearted safety video that was created for a meeting of workers to recognize individual accomplishments and make news announcements about the plant, Dricks said.
The twin-reactor nuclear plant was shut last year after a small radiation leak led to the discovery of damage to hundreds of steam generator tubes that carry hot, radioactive water.
Edison is seeking federal permission to restart one reactor.
